چکیده

Steerable lters, as developed by Freeman and Adelson, are a class of rotation-invariant linear operators that may be used to analyze local orientation patterns in imagery. The most common examples of such operators are directional derivatives of Gaussians and their 2-D Hilbert transforms. The inherent symmetry of these lters produces an orientation response that is periodic with period , even when the underlying image structure does not have such symmetry. This problem may be alleviated by reconsidering the full class of steerable lters. In this paper, we develop a family of evenand oddsymmetric steerable lters that have a spatially asymmetric \wedge-like" shape and are optimally localized in their orientation response. Unlike the original steerable lters, these lters are not based on directional derivatives and the Hilbert transform relationship is imposed on their angular components. We demonstrate the ability of these lters to properly represent oriented structures.

Steerable wedge filters for local orientation analysis

Steerable filters have been used to analyze local orientation patterns in imagery. Such filters are typically based on directional derivatives, whose symmetry produces orientation responses that are periodic with period pi, independent of image structure. We present a more general set of steerable filters that alleviate this problem.

Minutiae Verification in Fingerprint Images Using Steerable Wedge Filters

A majority of the existing fingerprint recognition systems are based on matching minutia features. Therefore minutiae extraction forms a very critical step and greatly influences the overall accuracy of the matching system. Poor ridge structure and processing artifacts result in missing and spurious minutia that can degrade the matching performance. We propose a novel approach based on Steerabl...

A Novel Radial Intensity Based Edge Operator

A novel edge operator is introduced based on steerable asymmetric linear filters consisting of radial wedge segments. An intensity profile is computed by averaging intensity values along a radial wedge segment as it "sweeps" about a small circular neighborhood. The "steerability" of the filters allows for interpolation of a continuous profile function for n discretely sampled postions of the ra...

Novel Approaches for Minutiae Verification in Fingerprint Images

Minutiae extraction is one of the critical steps in fingerprint verification algorithms. Any missing minutiae or spurious minutiae introduced at this stage can degrade the performance of the matching algorithm. Existing approaches for minutiae filtering use heuristics and adhoc rules to eliminate such false positives. We propose two new techniques for minutiae verification based on novel gray l...

Rotated Wedge Averaging Method for Junction Characterization

The computational cost of conventional lter methods for junction characterization is very high. This burden can be attenuated by using steerable lters. However, in order to achieve a high orientational selectivity to characterize complex junctions a large number of basis lters is necessary. From this results a yet too high computational eeort for steerable lters. In this paper we present a new ...
